How recruitment agents advertise

There are two ways by which recruiters advertise. The process is similar for print media and the internet.

The first is known as a menu advertisement. In this case the recruitment agency lists out a range of positions for which they are seeking to attract candidates. They don’t name employers, they just give summaries of the job descriptions. The idea is to demonstrate their expertise in a particular sector, or for a particular type of job and to convince you that they have so many positions available that you just don’t need to go anywhere else! The recruiter pays for these advertisements themselves.

The other type of recruiter advert is known as client paid advertising. As the name suggests, the employer is paying for this and they will be advertising just one or two vacancies that they have. The advertisement may or may not include the employer’s name and details. The aim is to generate interest in the specific positions. However, if you respond to one of these adverts and the employer decides they do not want to take things further with you, you may find that the recruiter will approach you with details of other vacancies that they have.

Advertising on the internet offers very wide coverage and tends to attract vast numbers of people from outside the specialisation, especially when generalist boards are used, such as Monster or TotalJobs. You need to bear this in mind when applying for jobs that you have seen online. It is very difficult for suitable candidates to get noticed and you will be relying on the recruiter’s ability to sift and sort applicants properly. For this reason you should treat online advertising with caution and not spend too long applying for jobs that you don’t want, or don’t stand a reasonable chance of getting.

Adverts in the national press are expensive and are often only used for senior management appointments or where the employer wants to ensure they are reaching as wide an audience as possible. Selection recruiters often use the national press as it is a good way to secure plenty of applications.
